Many Jamaicans own a vehicle. It makes travel easier, but they are costly to buy and maintain. Insurance, gas is also expensive, this makes driving in Jamaica an expensive venture.

Cars in Jamaica cost twist the price of those in North America. Even older cars here are expensive. This makes driving in Jamaica an expensive venture.

Toyota and Honda are the most popular economic vehicle on the island, prices depreciate slower than other budget vehicles. They are affordable, easy to maintain, the reason for their popularity.

European luxury models are available here, but they are expensive. The cost of a luxury car can buy a two- three-bedroom house in a middle-income neighborhood. Despite the price, luxury cars are prevalent on Jamaica’s roads, especially in Kingston and Montego.

Motor vehicle prices in Jamaica

A Porsche Macan starts at $14.95M, Cayenne $20.5M, those are the least expensive ones available while a new BMW or Benz cost upwards of $9.5m.

ATL Motors sells BMW Audi and a few others while Stewart’s Auto Group distributes Mercedes. They are the dominant players.

Japanese-made vehicles dominate the economical section of local motor vehicle retail. With Toyota and Honda being the dominate players. A new Honda Civic cost $5.5m or higher, while a Toyota Corolla sells for $4.5m or better. These models are the most popular on the island, because they hold value longer.

The main dealerships for these brands are Toyota Jamaica and ATL Automotive Group.

Used Car dealership dominates the budget automotive marker. They import pre-owned vehicles from Japan. The average working-class Jamaican can afford them. A five-year-old car costs upwards of $900k. Price varies depending on the make, model, and condition.

Renter Car in Jamaica

Renting an automobile is a good idea if you plan to explore the Island. It is cheaper than charter. Before getting that rental, make sure you are a competent drive. Jamaica’s streets are unnerving, if you are an unskilled driver.

Rentals are affordable, prices are comparable with North America. Price range from upwards of US $35 per day. A few internationals renter companies are at the two major airports.

Vehicles are available in varied sizes and brands. If you are on a shoestring budget, a compact car is perfect. They are reliable transport with a low gas mileage. If cash is not your problem, source a luxury automobile or SUV they are excellent for the Island’s bumpy road.

Stay away from old cars, no matter how cheap you are getting it.

The auto rental business in Jamaica is competitive, so finding cheap cars is easy. You need to know the pitfalls.

Three types of Renter dealers are available, international companies such as Avis and Budget Car Rental, and Hertz. Local businesses such as Island Car Rental and Hummingbird. Other options include smaller enterprises with a few fleets or private individuals that rent their personal vehicles.

Registered company has protocols in place to protect you. It is tricky if you have a mishap with a car rented from an individual. The commercial use of their vehicle violates their insurance policy, so it does not cover you.

Renter car options available in Jamaica

The international enterprises and large Jamaican companies follow a strict guideline. You need a credit with a minimum balance of at a thousand US dollars.

Be from twenty-one to seventy-five years old, have your driver’s license for over a year old. You must be twenty-three or older with a driver’s licenses over three years to rent some vehicle.

Some companies have different requirements, but the age limit and driver’s license are standard.

Small companies accept cash, but you have to make a deposit. These smaller companies have a minimum number of days, which they rent.

Renting a private vehicle is easy once your driver’s license is a year old, pay cash upfront and you are good to go.

What you need to drive in Jamaica

You need a license to drive a motor vehicle in Jamaica. If you are from an English-speaking country, you can use the one issue in your country for one year. After which, you will need a Jamaican driver’s license. Non-English speaking nationals need an international driver’s license with their information translated into English.

Jamaica has an extensive network of tolls, highways, and parochial roads.

High ways are free to use most are single lanes. Major highways in the two cities are dual carriage.

Jamaicans drive on the left side of the road while they overtake on the right. North American might have difficulties to adjust.. Commonwealth countries drive on the left side so it is easier for them to drive in Jamaica.

Highway speed is 80kmph 50km/h in the built-up area. East to West toll road is from 70km/h to 110 km/h. South the west is 50 to 80 kph.

Toll cost range from $130 to $4200.

Here is a link for Jamaica toll rate.

What to expect from other drivers when driving in Jamaica.

Jamaica is not the place to drive if you are not a competent driver. Off roads are narrow with poor signage. Some motorists are aggressive. Loud horns verbal abuse is common if you are driving at a pedestrian pace.

Drivers in Kingston are the worst. Taxi drivers, bus operators are the worse of the worse. They will cut you off drive, play chicken while cussing you out.

Driving in Jamaica, Google map

It is easy to find anywhere in Jamaica. Google map works in urban areas, but it can be a tricky in the rural sections. A physical map, one on your phone or tablet, is an asset.

Internet signal can be unreliable in the mountainous areas. So have a backup. If you follow these simple rules, difficult to get lost in Jamaica.

Know where you are going if you travel on the coast, stick to the coastline. Mountainous roads is a sign you are on the wrong path.

High Ways connect parish capitals. coast to Kingston starts at Mamee Bay in Saint Ann and ends at Ferry in Saint Catherine. That is the best choice.

From Portland to Kingston you can drive through the mountains. The scenery is wonderful. If you want a faster trip travel to Saint Ann, then take the toll to Ferry. This is a faster way.

Jamaicans speak English and are helpful, so don’t be afraid to ask for directions. Be cautious in the rural areas, “around the corner”, for rural folks could mean ten miles away. Soon reach could mean an hour away.

Map of Jamaica

conclusion

Like most places on the planet you can drive in Jamaica. Plan your routes, follow the roads and be alert. You will be ok.

A few wrong turns are unavoidable, but it is impossible to get lost in Jamaica. There is always someone to give you correct direction. Be cautious traveling at nights of the major roads. Potholes will surprise and cause headaches. Damage rims or tires are not sometime you want at night, on a dark, lonely country road.

If driving is not your thing but you want to explore the Island, public transportation is your best choice. Check this post on how to travel on public transportation in Jamaica.

Ride-sharing services like Uber have revolutionized the way we travel from one place to another. With just a few taps on your smartphone, you can hail a ride and be on your way in minutes. But, like any other service, it’s important to show appreciation for your driver’s hard work.

Tipping your Uber driver is not only a way to thank them for their service but also a way to ensure they are fairly compensated for their time and effort. However, figuring out the right amount to tip can be tricky, especially if you’re not familiar with the etiquette.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of calculating the right amount to tip your Uber driver based on various factors such as distance, time, and overall service quality. So, whether you’re a first-time Uber user or a seasoned rider, follow these tips to ensure you’re tipping your driver the right amount every time.

Tipping your Uber driver is an essential part of the ride-sharing experience. It’s a way to show appreciation for their hard work and ensure they are fairly compensated for their time and effort. As a driver, they rely on tips to supplement their income, and it’s a way for them to make a living.

It is not only a way to thank your driver for their service, but it also encourages them to provide a high level of customer service. A well-tipped driver is more likely to go the extra mile to ensure your ride is comfortable, safe, and enjoyable.

Calculating the right amount to tip your Uber driver can be challenging, as there are several factors to consider. The amount you tip depends on a variety of factors such as distance, time, and overall service quality. Here are some factors to consider when calculating a tip for your Uber driver:

Distance

The distance of your trip is one of the primary factors to consider when calculating your tip. If you’re taking a short trip, you may want to consider tipping a higher percentage to make up for the lower fare. On the other hand, if you’re taking a longer trip, a lower percentage may be appropriate.

Time

The time of day is another factor to consider when calculating your tip. If you’re taking an Uber during peak hours or in heavy traffic, you may want to tip your driver a higher percentage to compensate for their time spent in traffic.

Service Quality

The overall quality of service provided by your driver should also be a factor in your tip calculation. If your driver was friendly, helpful, and provided a comfortable ride, you may want to tip them a higher percentage. However, if your driver was rude, unprofessional, or provided a poor driving experience, you may want to consider tipping a lower percentage or not tipping at all.

There are several common tipping practices for Uber rides that you can use as a guide when calculating your tip. Here are some general guidelines to follow:

15-20%

A common practice is to tip your Uber driver 15-20% of the total fare. This is a good starting point, and you can adjust the percentage up or down based on the factors mentioned above.

Flat Rate

Another common practice is to tip your driver at a flat rate. This is a good option if you’re taking a short trip and don’t want to tip a small percentage.

Round-Up

If you don’t want to do the math, you can always round up to the nearest dollar or five dollars. This is a quick and easy way to show your appreciation for your driver’s service.

Uber now offers an in-app tipping feature that makes it easy to tip your driver without having to carry cash. When you rate your driver at the end of your ride, you’ll have the option to tip them. You can choose between preset tipping amounts or enter a custom amount. The in-app tipping feature is a convenient way to ensure your driver is fairly compensated for their service.

If you prefer to tip your driver in cash, you can do so at the end of your ride. When your driver drops you off, simply hand them the cash and thank them for their service. Tipping in cash is a great way to show your appreciation for your driver’s hard work and provides them with an immediate reward for their service.

If you’re taking a shared ride or UberPOOL, it’s important to consider the other passengers when calculating your tip. It’s common practice to tip a higher percentage when sharing a ride with others. This is because your driver has to make multiple stops, and it takes more time and effort to provide a quality ride. A good rule of thumb is to tip 20-25% when sharing a ride with others.

While it’s important to show appreciation for your driver’s hard work, there are some situations where you may not want to tip. If your driver was rude, unprofessional, or provided a poor driving experience, you may want to consider not tipping at all. However, it’s important to consider the situation before deciding not to tip. If your driver was dealing with difficult traffic or weather conditions, it may not be fair to withhold a tip.

Tipping is not the only way to show appreciation for your Uber driver. Here are some other ways to show your gratitude:

Leave a Positive Rating

When you rate your driver at the end of your ride, leave a positive rating and a comment. This is a great way to let your driver know that you appreciated their service and that they did a great job.

Say Thank You

A simple “thank you” at the end of the ride can go a long way. It’s a quick and easy way to show your driver that you appreciated their service.

Provide Feedback

If your driver provided exceptional service, consider providing feedback to Uber. This can help your driver get recognized for their hard work and may lead to better opportunities for them in the future.

Tipping has become an important part of the ride-sharing industry. It’s a way for riders to show appreciation for their driver’s hard work and ensure they are fairly compensated for their time and effort. It also encourages drivers to provide a high level of customer service, which benefits both riders and drivers. With the introduction of in-app tipping, it’s easier than ever to tip your driver and show your appreciation for their service.

Tipping your Uber driver is an important part of the ride-sharing experience. It’s a way to show appreciation for their hard work and ensure they are fairly compensated for their time and effort. By considering factors such as distance, time, and overall service quality, you can calculate the right amount to tip your driver. Whether you choose to tip in-app or in cash, it’s important to show your driver that you appreciate their service. So, the next time you take an Uber, be sure to follow these tips to ensure you’re tipping your driver the right amount every time.

Ride-sharing services like Lyft have become a popular mode of transportation for many people. Not only are they convenient and affordable, but they also provide a great opportunity for passengers to interact with their drivers.

One topic that often comes up when it comes to ride-sharing is tipping. While tipping has long been a custom in the service industry, many passengers are unsure about the etiquette of tipping their Lyft driver.

Should you tip your driver in cash or through the app?

How much should you tip?

And what if you’re not satisfied with the service you received?

In this guide, we’ll explore the etiquette of tipping your Lyft driver and provide some helpful tips for passengers who want to show their appreciation for a job well done.

Whether you’re a seasoned Lyft user or a first-time rider, this guide will help you navigate the sometimes confusing world of ride-sharing etiquette.

One of the most common questions that Lyft passengers have is about how much they should tip their driver. Tipping is a way to show your appreciation for good service, but it can be tricky to know how much is enough.

In general, a good rule of thumb is to tip between 15% and 20% of the total fare. This means that if your fare is $20, you should tip between $3 and $4.

However, there are some factors that can influence how much you should tip.

For example, if your driver went above and beyond to provide excellent service, you may want to tip more. On the other hand, if there were issues with the ride such as a longer route or poor driving, you may choose to tip less or not at all.

Ultimately, the decision of how much to tip is up to you, but remember that a fair and adequate tip is always appreciated by your driver.

When it comes to tipping your Lyft driver, there are several factors to consider.

Firstly, consider the level of service you received. Did your driver provide excellent service, such as offering water or snacks?

Did they take a particularly efficient route or provide an extra level of care? If so, consider tipping a little extra.

Another factor to consider is the length of your ride. If you took a short ride, it may be appropriate to tip a little more than the standard 15-20% to make up for the lower fare. Conversely, if you took a long ride, you may not need to tip as much as the fare will already be higher.

Finally, consider the time of day and type of ride. If you took a Lyft during peak hours or during a busy event, consider tipping a little more as your driver may have had to navigate through traffic or deal with a higher volume of passengers.

If you took a Lyft Line and shared the ride with other passengers, consider tipping a little more as your driver had to deal with multiple stops and pickups.

Tipping your Lyft driver can have a significant impact on their income. While Lyft drivers are paid a base fare for each ride, they rely on tips to supplement their income.

In fact, many drivers report that tips can account for up to 30% of their earnings. This means that by tipping your driver, you are helping to support their livelihood and ensure that they can continue providing excellent service to passengers like yourself.

It’s also important to note that tipping can have a positive impact on your driver’s overall rating. Lyft drivers are rated by passengers on a five-star scale, and a high rating is essential for drivers to continue working for the company.

By tipping your driver, you are showing your appreciation for their service, which can lead to a higher rating and more opportunities for the driver to earn income.

Tipping your Lyft driver through the app is a quick and easy process. After your ride is complete, the app will prompt you to rate your driver and leave a tip if you choose to do so.

You can select from pre-set tip amounts or enter a custom amount. Once you confirm your tip, it will be charged to the credit card on file and added to your driver’s earnings for that ride.

It’s important to note that Lyft drivers receive 100% of the tips that they earn through the app. Unlike some other ride-sharing services, Lyft does not take a percentage of the tip as a commission. This means that all of your tip goes directly to your driver, which is just another reason to tip generously.

While tipping through the app is the most convenient and secure way to tip your Lyft driver, there are other options for passengers who prefer not to use the app.

One option is to tip your driver in cash at the end of the ride. This can be a good option if you don’t have a credit card on file with Lyft or if you prefer to tip in cash.

However, it’s important to remember that not all drivers may accept cash tips. Some drivers may prefer to receive tips through the app to ensure that they are recorded and added to their earnings.

If you choose to tip in cash, be sure to ask your driver if they accept tips this way before offering the tip.

Another alternative to tipping is to leave a positive review for your driver. While this doesn’t provide extra income for the driver, it can still be a valuable way to show your appreciation for their service.

Positive reviews can help drivers attract more passengers and earn a higher rating, which can lead to more income in the long run.

While tipping your Lyft driver is a great way to show your appreciation for their service, there are some common mistakes that passengers often make. One mistake is to forget to tip altogether. While tipping is not mandatory, it is expected in the service industry and can help support your driver’s income.

Another mistake is to tip too little or too much. As mentioned earlier, a fair and adequate tip is between 15% and 20% of the total fare. Tipping too little can be seen as a sign of disrespect or poor service while tipping too much may not be necessary and can be seen as overcompensating.

Finally, be sure to tip your driver promptly. Lyft drivers rely on tips to supplement their income, so it’s important to provide your tip as soon as possible after your ride is complete. This will ensure that your driver receives the tip and can continue providing excellent service to other passengers.

While tipping is a common practice in the United States, it’s important to remember that cultural differences can influence tipping practices. In some countries, tipping is not expected or is considered insulting. In other countries, a service charge may be included in the bill, which eliminates the need for additional tipping.

If you are traveling to a foreign country and plan to use Lyft or other ride-sharing services, be sure to research the tipping etiquette in that country. You may find that tipping is not expected or that a different percentage is considered appropriate.

By being aware of cultural differences, you can ensure that you are tipping appropriately and showing respect for local customs.

Tipping your Lyft driver is not only a way to show your appreciation for their service, but it’s also crucial for the ride-sharing industry as a whole. Ride-sharing services like Lyft rely on drivers to provide excellent service and attract new customers. By tipping your driver, you are helping to support their income and ensure that they can continue providing excellent service to passengers.

In addition, tipping can help to promote a positive and respectful relationship between drivers and passengers. By tipping generously and showing your appreciation for good service, you are helping to create a culture of respect and gratitude within the ride-sharing community. This can lead to a better overall experience for both drivers and passengers.

In conclusion, tipping your Lyft driver is a great way to show your appreciation for their service and support their income.

When tipping, be sure to consider factors such as the length of your ride and the level of service you received.

Tip promptly and through the app if possible, and be sure to avoid common tipping mistakes such as tipping too little or too much.

Remember that tipping is not mandatory, but it is expected in the service industry.

By tipping generously, you are helping to support your driver’s income and ensure that they can continue providing excellent service to passengers.

So the next time you take a Lyft, be sure to show your appreciation for your driver’s hard work and dedication.

The busiest times of the day for arrival at Montego Bay Airport are from 11 am to 2 pm. Several flights usually land close to each other. Check-in time for most hotels is 3 pm, so you can see why many flights arrive in those time slots.

Although Montego Bay Airport can process up to 4,200 passengers per hour, the waiting time might be much longer. To avoid long delays, travel in the afternoon or early morning. While you might get to check into your room at most resorts before 3 pm, you can still enjoy the property while waiting. Late arrival would cause you to miss a day of sunshine, but it might be worth it. Click here for flight arrival.

The six most active months at the Montego Bay airport are March, June, July, August, November, and December. With restrictions lifted, things might fluctuate a bit with more people finally taking their vacation, which was postponed because of covid.

Clearing Jamaica customs can be a pain in the neck, so avoid lengthy lines using Club Mobay. It only costs a few bucks per traveler. You get somewhere comfortable to lounge while waiting on your transfer, have a drink, or even shower. Get VIP treatment the moment you step off your flight. It is even more convenient if you vacation with a group arriving on different flights.

You will need to book Club Mobay 48 hours in advance.

There are other VIP lounges at Montego Bay Airport similar to Club Mobay. They are provided by luxury resort brands, such as Sandals, Hyatt Zalara/Zava, Couples, and Halfmoon resort. You have to book with those resorts to get access.

Sangster International Airport is owned by Desarrollo De Concessiones Aeroportuarias S.A. (DCA), a Mexico-based Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico (GAP) subsidiary with a 74.5% interest, and Vancouver, Canada-based Vantage Airport Group, with the remaining 25.5%.

Montego Bay is the tourist capital of Jamaica and hosts some of the biggest hotel brands in the tourism industry. Therefore it is easy to find suitable accommodation near the Airport. Some hotels are based on reputation and ratings; I have also stayed at a few.

Sea Garden Resort, Royal Decameron, and Deja Resort are all-inclusive resorts about a 10-minute drive from Montego Bay Airport; they have good service and affordable prices. The S Hotel is a European Style Luxury hotel in the same vicinity. They are all on Gloucester Avenue, so you will avoid the MoBay traffic and get easy access to the beaches and restaurants nearby.

On the opposite side, Sandals Montego Bay, Jamaica’s top luxury resort, is less than 10 minutes away from Montego Bay Airport and 15 mins from the Mobay Hip Strip.

You have many all-inclusive resorts along the Rose Hall main road, the furthest just 30 minutes away from the Airport. For example, Rui Montego Bay, Zoerty Montego Bay, Holiday Inn Montego Bay, HalfMoon, Hyatt Zilara/Zava, Jewell Grande Montego Bay, Hilton Rose Hall, and the end, there is Iberostars Grande Rose Hall / Iberostars Selection Rose Hall Suites.

Find out more about all-Inclusive resorts here. For example, see the options available in Montego Bay. Also, see the best adults-only resort on the Island.

Holiday Inn Montego is a local favorite because of its affordable prices, service, and local food options.

There are also small hotels and AirBNB options near Mobay airport, such as the Blue Archid, less than 10 minutes from the Airport. So many others are available; a quick search will give you some great options.

Iberostar Rose Hall, Montego Bay

You can find many things to do in Mobay without going too far from the Airport. Here are a few beaches to visit less than 30 minutes from the Airport; Doctor Cave Beach, Tropical Bliss, and Harmony Beach Park. Also, check out Chukka Montego Bay for nature adventure and Catamaran cruises. Margaritaville on the Montego Bay Hip Strip is an excellent place for food and entertainment, as well as Usain Bolt Tracks And Record and Coral Cliff Gaming.

Norman Manley International Airport is in Kingston, Jamaica’s capital. It receives over 600,000 passengers a year.

It is preferred by travelers going to Kingston, eastern and central Jamaica.

The five busiest months at Norman Manely International Airport are March, June, July, August, and December. August and December are the two most active months. This is because Jamaicans living overseas normally visit to celebrate the holidays with family, and many travels to the USA and other countries for Holidays. So if you are traveling during those months, expect delays. Fewer people travel in February, so it’s the best month to use Kingston airport to avoid the crowd. Also, it is the best time to get deals because there are many empty seats on airplanes coming into the Island.

Club Kingston, like Club Mobay, is the VP lounge at the Norman Manley International Airport. They fast-track the immigration process while you wait for your transfer in comfort, have a meal, or take a shower if you feel freshened up before reaching your final destination.

Norman Manley International Airport is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Airports Authority of Jamaica (AAJ).

Kingston is the cultural capital of the Caribbean; its vibrant with entertainment. Although it contrasts with the north coast, where there are many natural attractions, it has exciting things to do. However, visitors to Jamaica’s capital might be concerned about safety, preventing them from venturing out. Click for Kingston safety tips.

Here are things you can do on your trip to Kingston. First, visit Bob Marley Museum, Peter Tosh Museum, or the Money Museum. Then, go for ice cream, a meal, or shop for souvenirs at Devon’s House; while at it, try their delicious goat patty.

Check out Hope Zoo or the Hope Botanical Garden; it is an excellent place to jog or picnic. Emancipation Park in Kingston is a great place to meet locals or chill.

Learn about Jamaica’s national heroes and nation builders with a trip to Jamaica National Hero’s Park. First, watch the Sunset at the Kingston waterfront or the Palisadoes. Then, buy authentic Jamaica souvenirs at Kingston Craft Market.

The infamous Port Royal is an exciting place to visit; while there, grab a bite at Gloria’s Seafood restaurant. I prefer the one close to the fishing dock. Viewing Kingston Harbor at night from upstairs is amazing.

The Market Place is excellent for night entertainment and restaurants; it’s also where you find Usain Bolt Tracks and Records.

Click here for more things to do in Kingston.

Many excellent hotels are close to Kingston’s Airport; I would recommend some based on experience and their reputation.

  1. The ROK Hotel in Down Town Kingston on the Water Front gives an Amazing view of Kingston Harbour. It’s about 20 mins drive from the Airport.
  2. Grand Port Royal is about a 1o mins drive from the Airport. Port Royal, Jamaica’s historic town, offers a great view of Kingston Harbour; it was recently upgraded, expect services and facilities to improve. Grand Port Royal is one of the closest hotels to the Norman Manley International Airport.
  3. New Kingston has a cluster of hotels with a reputation for offering excellent service. Here are a few; some I have stayed with, while others are based on guest feedback and shared knowledge. The Pegasus Hotel, Terra Nova Hotel, Spanish Court Hotel, The AC Hotel by Marriot (new), The Hilton Kingston, and the Country Yard By Marriot (new) have excellent ratings. They are known for hosting business meetings, conferences, and upscale social events.

These are a few budget-friendly hotels in or around New Kingston.

  1. Medallion Hall Hotel, Chris Star Villas, The Sunset Inn. These are not four or 5-star hotels, but they are good enough for a few nights on a budget and close to the Airport. Kingston has many other affordable alternatives, but the quality might vary.
  2. Air BNB is cheaper than hotels; there are many good quality in new Kingston; however, the closest ones to the Airport are In Harbourview. Harborview is a relatively safe residential community about 10 mins from the Airport.

Hotels in Kingston are not All-Inclusive like those on the North Coast; however, some have excellent restaurants and offer continental breakfast. You also can eat at one of the many restaurants in Kingston, which are within walking distance or a cab ride away. Uber works perfectly in Kingston and is affordable, so use them if you are uncomfortable getting a cab. You can pay on the app or with cash.

Use Jamaican currency; it is easier. Click here for a guide on how to use Jamaica’s public transport.

Ian Fleming International Airport is the smallest of the three international airports in Jamaica. It is in Boscobel Saint Mary, but some people believe it is located in Ocho Rios because of its proximity to the popular destination.

It serves smaller commercial and private planes; however, American Airlines plans to start flying there by the end of 2022.

At the post’s writing, there are no commercial flights from the USA to Ian Fleming International Airport; however, by November 5, 2022, American Airlines, under its American Eagle, will start operating non-stop flights from Miami. As a result, traveling to Ocho Rios will be much faster because it is only 15 minutes away. Compared to 1 1/2 hours from Montego Bay and Kingston.

Ian Fleming International Airport processes an average of 20,000 passengers per year. With mostly scheduled local flights from Tensin Pen Aerodrome In Kingston, Negril Aerodrome, and Ken Jones Aerodrome in Portland. It is easier to fly to these locations, which generally take 15 minutes instead of hours driving. International Airlink and Timair are airlines that service these airports.

The Airport Authority of Jamaica owns and operates the Ian Flemming International Airport.

Hibiscus Lodge Hotel is one of my favorite bed and breakfasts in Ocho Rios; it is within walking distance from the town center and perches on a cliff, giving a fantastic ocean view. There are other terrific options at Fisherman’s Point and Sand Castle.

Many all-inclusive resorts close to the Ian Fleming International Airport with good ratings. Couples Tower Isle, Jamaica Inn, Riu Resort, Jewels Paradise Cove Sandals Resort, and Beaches Resorts are less than 40 minutes from the Airport. The favorite resort for locals and Jamaicans living overseas is Moon Palace.

Ocho Rios is blessed with natural beauty; the eight rivers that flow through this town make it a special place. Waterfalls and attractions are in abundance. Here are a few of my favorites. Top of the list is Dunns River Fall, a special place; every visitor to Jamaica should go there at least once. Konoko Falls and Garden, Blue Hole, and Little Dunn’s River are others.

Beaches in Ocho Rios are plenty; here are a few; James Bond Beach in Saint Mary, close to the Airport, is a favorite for locals. However, the entry cost keeps some people away. Fisherman’s beach in the heart of Ocho Rios also Ocho Rios Bay Beach are popular spots for tourists and locals. Mahagony beach is not ideal for swimming but perfects if you want a private place to lime with friends. Its rustic setting is not for those looking for luxury or pampering.

Your trip to Ochi wouldn’t be complete without visiting Mystic Mountain; try their famous bobsled ride, zipline, and electric ATV. Yaaman Adventure Park is another spot to explore. First, make your books at Chukka Outpost in Ocho Rios to get the best package deals on a nature adventure. Next, you visit multiple attractions, Catamaran tours, ATVs, and horseback riding.

Also, visit Margaritaville in Ochi; it is the perfect place for food, entertainment, and shopping. Usain Bolt Tracks And Records is also nearby.

Dunn’s River Falls, Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Jamaica has two military airports, one at Uppark Camp in Kingston and the other in Moneague Saint Ann. They serve the airwing of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).

Aerodromes in Jamaica are small airports that accommodate small aircraft flying locally. There are three of them on the Island, Tinson Pen Aerodrome in Kingston, Ken Jones Aerodromes in Portland, and Negril Aerodrome in Westmoreland.

The domestic carriers, International Airlink and Timair offer chartered and scheduled flights. They are also available for sightseeing and other activities.

There are two cities in Jamaica, Kingston, and Montego Bay, and both have an International Airport. Kingston’s Airport is about 188km (116 miles) from Montego Bay Airport. You can fly to anyone, but the transfer might take longer.

If traveling to the North Coast, use the Montego Bay airport. It’s about two and a half hours from Negril, Negril, and Ocho Rios and three hours from Treasure Beach.

It is easier to travel from Kingston Airport to Portland, which takes over three hours compared to over four hours from Montego Bay. It is almost the same time to travel from any of the two airports to Ocho Rios; it takes just over 1 1/2 hours. Traveling on the toll road from Kingston Ocho Rios, the non-toll options take much longer, and sections of the roads are not bad. Here is a helpful post if you are driving in Jamaica.

Ian Flemming International Airport is perfect for travels to Ocho Rios, Saint Mary, and Portland. It is just twenty minutes from Ocho Rios and two hours from Portland.

Here are some tips for using airports in Jamaica.

  1. Arrive at least three hours before check-in. It’s the general guide for using airports but is even more critical to follow in Jamaica. If there are any incidences, it will not cause you to miss your flight.
  2. Travel with a pen to fill out immigration forms; it’s good to have your own instead of borrowing from other travelers.
  3. Fill out the immigration form online. Jamaica immigration forms are available online; it’s a lot easier, and you will have time to get all the relevant information, such as where you are staying. Click here for the Jamaica Immigration form.
  4. Although the USD is desired and accepted in most places in tourist areas, things might be a bit different if you venture out. Therefore it is better to shop in local currency. Note the selling price of the USD is less if you are exchanging JMD for USD. Exchange your foreign currency at a local money exchange Cambio; you will get a better deal, primarily if you exchange USD for JMD.
  5. Prearrange transfer from the Airport. While you can transfer when you arrive, it is more convenient to plan before. For example, if you are using Kingston airport, it would be safer than going into a random taxi.

You need a passport to travel on a flight to or from Jamaica. So if you are traveling to the Island on a cruise, ensure you have your pass, especially if you plan to take a flight out.

Sangsters International airport In Montego is the busiest Jamaica airport. It processes an average of 1.5 million each year with the capacity to process 4200 passengers per hour in arrival and departure.

Florida is the nearest American state to Jamaica. Hollywood International Airport, Miami International Airport, and Orlando International Airport are the only three Florida airports with direct flights to Jamaica. A direct flight will take you less than two hours. However, a connecting flight might take you a little over four hours.

While you can take pictures in Jamaica airports, there are some areas you cannot. You will see signs where photography is not allowed.

Taking photos of strangers without permission is impolite so if you want to take a photo of someone at the Airport, ask. Jamaicans are friendly; most won’t mind taking pictures, but you must ask politely. Although they speak and understand English knowing a few Patios phrase and their meaning will help you.

There is an international airport in Jamaica, cities, Kingston and Montego Bay.

Sangster International Airport is the largest and busiest because most tourists travel to the north coast.

Norman Manley International is the second-largest and caters to visiting Kingston, central and eastern parts of the Island.

Ian Fleming International Airport, the smallest of the three, is located in Boscobel, Saint Mary, near the tourist town Ocho Rios. It serves small commercial and private aircraft and has daily scheduled local flights.

Three Aerodromes and two Military Airports complete the list of airports in Jamaica.

When traveling to Ocho Rios, one of the most common questions is, “Is there an airport in Ocho Rios?”

Unfortunately, the answer is no.

Kingston Airport is the nearest Airport, with regular international flights.

There are also airports in Montego Bay and Saint Mary. The Ian Flemming International Airport is less than fifteen minutes from Ocho Rios, but it accommodates mostly smaller airplanes and is primarily domestic. Because of its proximity, they market it as Ocho Rios Airport.

Which Airport is best?

Ian Flemming International airport would be ideal for travel to Ocho Rios; however, it is small and doesn’t have regular international commercial flights.

The Jamaica government postponed Plans for American Airlines’ nonstop flights from Miami to Ian Flemmings International Airport until 2023. Flying should have started on November 2022 with the Envoy E 75.

The best option is Mobay Airport, which is one and a half hours away, with many international flights from the USA. Most travelers to the north coast prefer this route.

However, Norman Manley International Airport is not a bad option if you cannot get your desired flight to Montego Bay. Kingston is one and a half hours from Ocho Rios, and you can quickly get a transfer.

Which Airport is best for Beaches Ocho Rios?

That depends on your preferences. Montego Bay airport is probably your best bet if you’re looking for a more relaxed atmosphere. Also, it is more significant than Norman Manley International airport in Kingston, with more flights from the US.

Some airlines only have flights to Mobay.

There is not much difference in traveler time to your destination or service. Whichever you choose, you’ll be able to find flights with most major airlines. You will still drive for over an hour the get to Beaches Ocho Rios.

Are there domestic flights from Ian Fleming International Airport

Traveling by air is an excellent way to explore Jamaica. For example, if you are in Ocho Rios and want to explore Kingston, Montego Bay Negril, or Portland, it is just a fifteen-minute plane ride away.

Daily scheduled domestic flights. A fifteen-minute drive from Ocho Rios to the Airport, you can reach your destination in no time.

Here are some airline that offers local fights Timair and Airlink. You can book your flight to any airport on the island; it saves time and is much safer than driving.

Conclusion

Ocho Rios doesn’t have an airport; however, Ian Fleming International Airport is a fifteen minutes drive away in Boscobel Saint Mary.

Since Saint Mary is not a popular destination, they use the popularity of Ocho Rios for marketing.

Large-scale commercial flight is not yet available, but luxury and small local commercial plane use this Airport. Although plans for American Airlines to start nonstop flights to Ian Fleming International have been pushed back, it should begin by the middle of next year.

Until IFIA starts getting large-scale commercial flights, Mobay and Kingston Airports are the only gateway to Jamaica.
